Chris approached Resolution Electric three years ago to explore how a solar pool heater could assist the existing heat pump to providing supplemental heating for the pool. The existing heat pump is located near the pool and adds to the background noise level while running. Ever increasing cost for electricity creates high utility bills during the spring start-up, running the heat pump through the season always places the home in the expensive tier two electrical tariffs.

The installation consists of seven Ecosun solar pool heater panels; manual isolation valves and a by-pass valve facilitate easy disconnection of the heat pump. The automatic controller and actuated three-way valve allows for optimal performance of the collectors.

During spring start-up I run the pool in solar only mode, raising the water temperature of the initial cold fill considerably. Final heating to a comfortable eighty-six degrees Fahrenheit by combining the output from the heat pump and solar heater. When the hot summer temperatures hit I am running solar only, later in the season the pool temperature is maintain with the solar and sparing use of the heat pump. Chris W - Kelowna
